Trial Plots 2025 February Update
Site Introduction
The Arable Event plots are back and once again will include variety and fertiliser trials. The plots, which are being looked after by our Arable department, will demonstrate the “real world” western performance of a full complement of winter cereals including wheat, barley, oats, hybrid rye and triticale. Plot tours hosted by industry specialists will give farmers a full and interactive overview of all market leading varieties, both new and old.
KWS Vibe, a newly recommended Group 1 milling wheat will be one of the millers on show, alongside a host of the Recommended List (RL) best current and candidate varieties. Examples include:
Bamford - a group 3 biscuit wheat from Elsoms which is a high yielding variety with a strong disease profile.
LG Beowulf - a group 4 hard wheat with some serious yield potential across all regions, it's strong strawed and produces a bold grain.
LG Typhoon - an incredibly consistent and robust variety. High untreated yields demonstrate just how resilient this wheat is, its high septoria score will attract growers particularly in the west.
KWS Scope - the new highest yielding variety on the RL, it brings new genetics to UK farmers owing to its German-bred parentage, it has huge yield potential and is a shorter strawed variety.
There will also be a comprehensive selection of leading barley and hybrid barley varieties, for example:
Kitty - an incredibly high yielding winter barley, with an unrivalled specific weight and resistance to lodging.
LG Caravelle - self proclaimed as the “easy choice”, Caravelle tops the RL with yields that challenge hybrid varieties.
KWS Tardis - a very popular variety, owing to its strong straw and consistent yields.
KWS Inys – a new hybrid variety from KWS, an interesting barley with incredibly strong straw.
Market favourite Mascani and potential rival Cromwell are the oats on show, alongside Lumaco triticale which is proving to be an advancement on KWS Fido . Finally SU Prospectiv is one of the hybrid ryes we will be displaying this year, it’s a high yielding successor to SU Performer with earlier maturity.
Once again we have three industry leading fertiliser manufacturers ICL, LKAB and Omex joining us to demonstrate both new and existing crop nutrition products. Representatives from each manufacturer will be on site to advise and discuss their products with farmers.
Crop Update
The site was drilled on 30th of October 2024. As with any farm, we are driven by the weather and due to the incredibly wet September and early October, drilling was delayed. This of course is representative and gives growers a “real world” example of how these varieties will perform. The previous cropping was OSR, the site was min-tilled and then drilled via a combination drill.
Since being drilled the crops have been subjected to more rainfall and some sharp frosts. Despite this the crops have established well and are ready to kick on once soil temperatures rise.
We will be bringing you regular updates on the site and look forward to seeing you on the day.
